XII International Conference of Solinio Art and Science
Dream, Eros, & Psyche

Cassano Delle Murge, Italy
September 25-27l 1999

A Brief Report by Georgia Berland
(AHP – the Association of Humanistic Psychology)

The XII International Conference of Solinio Art & Science, Dream, Eros, & Psyche, surprised, delighted, and enlightened me. Presenters and discussants from throughout Italy, plus Russia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Holland, the US, and a Chinese acupuncturist practicing in Moscow, offered a rich cultural mix. Equally exciting was the broad blend of disciplines. Psychotherapy mingled with physics, music therapy, philosophy, economics, ethnomusicology, gerontology, history, education, and service to people with mental and physical disabilities.
Far from the staccato discord such variety might imply, this diversity of perspective brought a far deeper awareness of how science, art, and spirit converge in the individual psyche, and new options for how this integration can be exercised through healing and positive action in the community. The feeling was very much of sharing and engaging around common concerns, rather than just presenting papers or research — finding common ground, and through that, moving to the next level of understanding. Relationships were formed which will certainly continue and branch into additional arenas. For example, I was able to connect Yugoslavian participants with AHP members in Belgrade, with the possibility of forming a community based on humanistic principles, and of becoming involved in other AHP-supported projects in the Balkans.
Papers and demonstrations included individual case studies, and scientific techniques, such as new computer technology from Russia which measures energy in various body systems and the re-balancing resulting from specific vocal and breathing exercises. There was an overview of the philosophy of Chinese medicine, and a history of physics and the effect of scientific discovery on the human psyche, including speculation on the recent discovery of a new form of energy by a US physicist.   The fascinating discussion of Tarantism, a traditionally diagnosed mental illness in Southern Italy often cured with a particular rhythmic musical ritual lasting several days, complimented a look at the resurgence of small business as an economic force revitalizing the life and culture of Puglia. The President of the regional school board sharing the challenges of providing a good education to poor and immigrant children, and the importance of individual citizen involvement, could as easily have pertained to California.
I was especially impressed by recent discoveries and clinical experience of the effectiveness of music therapy, and analyses of how this may relate to vibrational physics, as well as to culture, emotion, and psychology. As a non-practitioner I learned how it has been applied to serious physical disorders, from head trauma to heart disease and more, with documented success. I found myself becoming acutely and freshly aware of the crucial role music has played in my own life, and how I experience it in my body. I realize why this field is growing in recognition and support from medical and psychiatric professionals as well as in academia and the public mind.   Considerable publication in this field, as well as organizations which advance and share scientific research and clinical studies on music therapy, have grown from these conferences and the work of Dr. Palmirotta and A..M.O.
Ontosophy, from its historical roots in Pythagorean theory to its merging of philosophy, science, art, and psychology, was central to the coherence of the diverse viewpoints at the conference.   Ontosophy recognizes the natural tendency of the human organism toward health, and bases its therapeutic approaches on rebalancing or re-tuning the psyche, in its broadest sense of mind, body, and soul, and on creating the social and cultural conditions which allow this natural healing to take place.
Humanistic psychologists and humanistic practitioners of any profession could benefit from the historical and philosophical depth of Ontosophy, from its interdisciplinary breadth, and its emphasis on the relationship of science and psychology. My hope is that exposure to Ontosophy can be extended through posting some of the conference presentations on ahpweb, the Internet site of the Association for Humanistic Psychology. I left Italy wishing that US students were taught philosophy as part of public school curriculum, and that music and art were more valued in schools.   Perhaps the struggles for identity faced by American teenagers and too often expressed destructively, could be ameliorated. Perhaps young people everywhere could gain a deeper understanding of reality, and more easily find their place in the history of humanity.
